A View From The Outside

Ever feel like you were on the outside looking in? I get that a lot, so here's my blog about the things I see and the experiences I have. Really it's a narcissistic thing to think you would even care, so if you do please leave a comment and soothe my bruised ego :)

Movin' out is hard to do

First there's the depressing fact that no matter how much you pack it never seems to BE packed until you have done it all. That stinks. No way to really chart your progress except to write down everything you own and then cross it off one by one like an obsessive freak.

Second there's the depressing fact that you end up reliving memories and the like while you pack. Most of them are good, but it does mean that these memories will become even more distant once you are out of your space and into a new one.

Third there's the depressing fact that you have to take everything off the walls and stare and blank spaces while you clean. I guess you could wait until last to take things down but then you fall victim to depressing fact #1 so you really can't win...

Packing sucks!

We had a great situation this weekend at work that is in my top 5 best stories from the field:

K is sitting in her office working on closing when S enters

S: did you guys check rooms already?
K: No, why?
S: Well I went down to check out and when I came back something was taken out of my room that I had forgotten
K: We have been having trouble with maintenance today - maybe they took it. I can ask them. What is it?
S: That doesn't matter - I can talk to them
K: I don't think they're around - I can call. What is it?
S: Let's just say it's my toy
K: Where was it?
S: In my bolster
K: Are you sure you want it back?
S: Well yeah it's my favorite toy and I really like it...
K: Ok well I will ask around

K goes to the cusotdian

K: Um...girl in X13 had her dildo taken out of her room - do you guys know anything about it
C: Yeah maintenance found it. It was white and crusty. They threw it out
K: Well the girl had not checked out yet and she wants it. We should not have been in the room so now we have to find it

C goes dumpster diving, finds the "toy" and turns it in to the front desk in a plastic bag. K calls S at her work and gets her boss

K: Can you please tell S that we found her toy and she can pick it up at the desk?
B: Sure (radios S and relays the tale)

I got my start date for work today. Got the shift I wanted and will be starting in June. Can't wait. Moving out blows esp since I have been here now for 2 years and have totally nested. Boy will living out of my car be a nice change.

The boy is crabby today. It's crunch time for school and he has HUGE assignments to do that are going to take him hours. I didn't help by saying that he should have been working on the semester-long journal all semester. Gonna keep my head down and work on my thesis for now.

So I quit coffee a while back because I was in this training for my new job. No cookstove and no morning fire = no coffee = WITHDRAWAL. But I got through it and am thinking at this point if I am going to be working there I should avoid caffiene so I can avoid withdrawal every 8 days.

I have decided however that there is nothing like caffiene to kick you up in the morning. I have tried ginseng and yerba mate. They are great and good for you but nothing is quite like the bean.

My teeth are a lot whiter though :)

Begged off work today and went for a bike ride instead. It was cool and rainy at the start, but by the time I got to the end of the 23 mile trek the sun was peeking out.

I compiled a list of things I would rather be doing than my job right now

Biking
Hiking
Having sex
Cooking good food
Getting a root canal
Travelling
Hanging out with Angelina Jolie
Reading some good book
Getting drunk with my friends
Sleeping
Being run over by a truck
Climbing mountains
Climbing
Getting my underear sniffed by a 250lb woman named Kyle
Listning to live music
Playing live music
Working on my thesis
Playing scrabble
Having nails driven through each of my toes

Went out last night for a ladies night - smallish turnout - A, Y, K, H and I were all there until the boys who were having their own night decided to crash. M, G, D, and J all joined us in downing fruity daquiris and making sexual jokes. When the night wound down A D and I went dancing for a while at one of the new bars in town. We had a good time watching people try and hit on A who is relatively impervious to come-ons unless it means getting free drinks. One guy was so drunk he fell asleep on her shoulder while they were dancing!

Get up to find that someone has smashed the mirror on 4, broken a walkway window with a rock, puked on G and bent our door down in the frame so that it won't close. This after a toilet was blown up in DHall the day before. Working in reslife when the weather gets warm can become intolerable. People get the crazies.

Some of the other things that have happened during the warmer spring months

Some ome guys threw a brick through my resident's window while she was in the room sleeping

A girl required EMT calls every night for suicide and detox

My girls had an underwear march in the hall to relieve stress - I come up to find 40 women in panties and bras parading around the hall

Someone decides to make a gummy bear sculpture in the bathroom on the windowsill. 5lb of gummy bears stuck together in one mass left there to melt in the late afternoon sun

The guys from one hall climb the balcony into the women's hall to serenade them with guitars - naked

3 weeks and I am outta here...praise whomever out there is listening!

Has anyone ever noticed that though we obviously give privlege to people with paler skin that a large number white people mark their beauty by being as tan as possible? I'm seeing the drive through Greek row in my head - girls outside in bikinis that resembe double eye patches covered in oil. The kicker is that it's only 65 degrees out.

Why don't you just keep fakin' bakin' until it actually gets warm bitches? Or is daddy's money running out for the semester?

A View From The Outside of an Adventure...

In one month I will pretty much be gone.

No, this is not a cry for help - not an angst-ridden suicidial post that no one will ever read. I will be gone because I am leaving. Pure and simple.

Leaving where you say? Well I have been living here in WA for almost 3 years - working, going to school. And now I stand teetering on the outer edge of my next big adventure. I am heading out. Out of this town, out of Washington, out of pretty much all I know here in the West.

I've done this before - I moved here from Massachusetts. I came out to work in residence life, get my Masters, and move up in the world to make my mark on the Student Affairs universe. Three years later I am getting out - out of school, out of residence life, and out of student affairs as quickly as possible. It's not for me. I need something a little more grassroots

And so my next adventure. I move out to Utah to work in Wilderness Therapy. To help troubled teens who need role models. I don't know if I am the best for the job, but hey, I'm gonna do it anyway.

I'll post more as this adventure unfolds. It should be wild!
